Definition of a business trip
Performing official duty in places other than the usual place of work by an order from his/her superior
Type of business trips
- Business trip within the same region: Trips within the same city including a Special City or Metropolitan City, same county or island, excluding Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, or trip covering a distance of 12km or less. Even if the travel distance exceeds 12km, a trip within the same city, county or island is considered a trip within the same region. A trip that involves traveling off island is considered a trip to a different region, but if the island is connected to land through a land route or bridge within the same city or county, the trip is considered a trip within the same region
- Business trip to a different region: Trip that involves leaving the city including a Special City or Metropolitan City, county or island, excluding Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, with a travel distance exceeding 12km
Duty of a civil servant on business trips
- A civil servant on business trip shall make his/her best efforts to perform the relevant official duties and shall not spend time engaged in private affairs
- When any cause that makes it impossible for a civil servant to perform his/her assigned duties within the fixed period of the business trip, he/she shall report such fact to the head of the agency to which he/she belongs by telephone, telegraph, or other means and receive his/her instruction
- The competent Minister may order a civil servant serving at a Korean diplomatic mission abroad to take a business trip to Korea for up to a period of 30 days: Provided, that the period of the business trip may be extended in extenuating circumstances with prior approval by the Prime Minister
- When a civil servant on a business trip has returned to his/her office after fulfilling the purpose of the trip, he/she shall submit without delay a report on the outcome of the business trip to the head of the agency to which he/she belongs: Provided, that a result report on minor matters may be made orally
- The head of an administrative agency may make the decision to undertake his or her own business trip when needed for official duties
- The head of the agency to which a pregnant civil servant belongs may restrict long-distance or long-term business trips of the relevant civil servant
